Waxing for Women

Waxing is a semi-permanent method of hair removal.  The technique removes hair from the root and it takes 3 to 6 weeks for the new hair to regrow.  Waxing can be carried out on almost any part of the body.  There are two types of wax – Hot & Warm.

Hot wax – applied thickly using a wooden spatula and then removed by peeling off – this method of waxing is used for intimate, delicate & facial areas.

Warm wax – applied thinly using either a roller or a wooden spatula and then removed using a strip of fabric – this method of waxing is used mainly for larger areas including the legs and arms and also the eyebrow area.

What to expect with waxing

Waxing is the most advantageous way of removing excess or unwanted hair from the body.  This leaves the waxed area very smooth and hair free for up to 6 weeks.  The area to be waxed is cleansed and your skin is prepared by using a thin layer of oil – this process is essential and will allow the wax to adhere to the hair and not the skin, making your treatment less painful.  The chosen wax is then applied to the area and removed as necessary.  The treatment is completed by ensuring there is no wax residue left on the skin and a post hair removal treatment is applied.

Benefits to waxing
  • Long lasting, smooth and silky skin
  • The areas being waxed are also exfoliated with the removal of dead skin cells
  • No skin damage, unlike other types of hair removal ie shaving, waxing does not cause adverse effects such as pigmentation or cuts and scars
  • Softer and finer body hair – after waxing the new hair that grows back is soft and fine
Factors to consider before waxing
  • Ensure the hairs are 1cm in length
  • Exfoliate 24 hours prior to your appointment to remove any dead skin cells meaning the wax will adhere to the hairs better
  • Medication users should seek advice as to whether the treatment is permissible.  Isotretinoin (also known as Roaccutane) thins the skin so waxing should be avoided, diabetics should also avoid waxing
  • Refrain from exercise for 24 hours
  • Attend your appointment clean, moisturiser and deodorant free
Factors to consider after waxing
  • Refrain from hot baths, saunas etc for 24 hours as the heat can aggravate the skin and make it more sensitive, the heat can also widen your pores causing a break out in infection and ingrown hairs
  • Refrain from exercise for 24 hours as sweating can give way to bacterial infections and wearing tight, air restricting clothing can cause friction which can lead to redness, sensitivity and ingrown hairs
  • Don’t attend hungover as alcohol has a dehydrating effect on the body and skin which could make the treatment more painful.  When your skin is dryer your pores retract making your hairs harder to remove thereby causing more pain
  • Do not use perfumed products as the chemicals can aggravate the skin causing soreness
On the day of your appointment
  • Wear loose clothing to ensure the areas that have been waxed are free from friction
  • Ensure you are clean and refrain from using deodorant or any moisturisers as this can prevent the wax from removing the hairs
  • Take painkillers (if needed) about an hour prior as this will take some of the edge off of the treatment and will help you to relax
  • Avoid certain times of the month as your skin is more sensitive before your period.  This is caused by lower level of oestrogen which allows for heightened sensitivity
  • Choose an experienced professional to carry out your treatment

Waxing for Women (the intimates)

What to expect with intimate waxing

Most UK salons and clients are unaware of the various intimate wax treatments that are being offered.  Over time, variations of the ‘Brazilian’ have taken place, the ways in which the treatments are carried out vary and this can be very confusing.  To make things a lot easier and therefore less embarrassing at your appointment, I have explained each of the intimate waxing treatments performed here at BC.
